Whether you’re looking for a hotel, motel, or Holiday Inn (some of you will get that), there’s no shortage of accommodation sites out there. If you’re fairly budget-savvy and are driven by bang for your buck, welcome. We’re the same!
That also means we’re generally not loyal to any one site or brand. You won’t see me lauding the value of collecting Hilton points, for example, as sometimes you’re in the middle of nowhere with no Hiltons to be found.
Also, you really have to collect A LOT of points for those free nights.
That not-all-in mentality also means we’re open to trying new things. When we got the opportunity to try out Whimstay vs. Airbnb, it was very much a “why not?” for us.
While we did agree to a review of our gifted stay, you know I keep it real around here. I’ll get into how things work at Whimstay, plus tips on when you may find yourself benefiting from the site in a financial way.
That’s the best way, right? That leaves more room for snacks.

What is Whimstay?
Whimstay is a vacation rental platform that specializes in offering last-minute deals on short-term accommodations. It’s positioned as an alternative to Airbnb, which you know we’ve been trying to move away from if you’ve been following along.

Whimstay focuses on helping travelers find discounted stays by filling unbooked inventory closer to travel dates.
This approach benefits both property managers, who can monetize otherwise vacant nights, and travelers seeking spontaneous getaways at reduced prices.
Unlike Airbnb, which caters to a broad range of booking timelines, Whimstay targets the niche of last-minute travelers. That makes discounted stays more likely, especially if you like a last-minute getaway.
You can catch a sneak peek of our trip with the short clip below:
Is Whimstay legit?
Whimstay is as legit as any other booking platform I’ve promoted on this site. While you’ll still see service and host fees on select listings, pricing seems more transparent. (I noticed not every property charges a host fee, but service fees are usual.)
A big complaint I’ve had with Airbnb over the years is around sneaky fees, including big cleaning fees. This is despite requests to take trash bins out to the street on trash day, strip beds, and vacuum pet hair.
Fun fact: We’ve been asked to do all of these things, by the way.
The interface on Whimstay seems more streamlined, allowing you to quickly browse and book available properties, often at significant discounts. These discounts are based on the listings showing up elsewhere.
Ready to check it out?
Book a Whimstay! You can comparison-check if you’d like with Airbnb, as many of the listings appear on both. I’ve never seen these kinds of discounts with last-minute bookings on Airbnb. In fact, some property owners on Airbnb won’t even let you book last-minute.
For property owners, Whimstay offers tools to manage listings and adjust pricing dynamically to attract last-minute bookings. This can lead to increased occupancy rates and revenue. I’m going to go ahead and call that a win for everyone involved.

How does it work?
Whimstay is simple. Here’s how it works:
- Plug in your destination and your dates.
- Find a property you like.
- Comparison-shop.*
- Book it!
*If I’m promised a cheaper experience, I want to make sure that’s accurate. Again, many of the properties appear elsewhere, like Airbnb. That’s how you know you’re getting a deal.
A Review of Our Stay

We were gifted a two-night stay on a recent trip to Washington, D.C., to celebrate the military retirement of a Navy friend of ours.
There were a lot of options in Capitol Hill, our target neighborhood, so it was easy to find a comfortable stay that was highly rated with solid reviews.
Note: Interested in checking it out? Here it is!
The property we chose had an added layer of information required for stays under 30 days, powered by Truvi. (That’s ID verification, something you’d expect from most hotel stays.)
The total ended up being $348.24, with a shoutout on how much you saved as part of your booking. In this case, we would have saved $71.60, but it may have gone even lower if we’d booked closer to our travel date. This site rewards spontaneity!

From there, all communication from our hosts came via email. Our property had a door code for both the front and interior apartment doors, so that information was sent ahead of our stay. We also got tips on parking and finding good places to eat.
Basically, it was like working with a really good, communicative Airbnb host. (I know you all have had nightmarish experiences, though.)
It all seemed smooth, with lots of reservation reminders from both Whimstay and Sojourn, the property managers of the property we were staying at.
They weren’t all automated messages, either. I like to let hosts know when I’ve arrived, and they replied within minutes with a personalized note.
As far as the unit itself, the apartment was small but tidy. The exterior and inside of the place matched the pictures online, which is always great.

There were just the two of us there for a quick stay, but we enjoyed the AC on a muggy couple of days, good coffee, and great toiletries. The neighborhood was an easy walk to the Metro and the U.S. Capitol.

When to Use Whimstay
It’s always good to have a few options available when you’re booking accommodations. I will always comparison-shop with the old standbys, like Booking.com and Hotels.com for hotels, and Vrbo as yet another Airbnb alternative.
There are scenarios where Whimstay could shine, though. Let’s get into it.

You’re on a spontaneous trip.
I’m pretty Type A, but we have found ourselves in scenarios where we’d like a weekend away closer to home. Whimstay is ideal for spontaneous trips because it specializes in last-minute vacation rentals at discounted rates.
If you decide to travel on a whim — see what they did there? — Whimstay helps you find high-quality, verified accommodations quickly and affordably. Its user-friendly app and website make it easy to browse available listings on the go, too.
Note: Since it focuses on unbooked inventory, you’re more likely to find more deals in popular destinations, even at the last minute. I have found most destinations represented on there as I’ve searched, though. There may just be fewer of them.
This is great for last-minute business travelers, especially the entrepreneurial sort who aren’t traveling with those heavy corporate cards.
You’re on an open-ended road trip.
I wish I’d known about this site when we were traversing the U.S. for a couple of years after leaving San Diego. We’d only book a month or so in advance for our long-term stays, and we paid for that pleasure on Airbnb.
Whimstay is perfect for an open-ended road trip because it gives you the flexibility to book accommodations as you go. Since the platform focuses on last-minute deals, you can decide your next stop based on where the best prices and availability are.
We’ve done some of that in the past already as nomads, but at nowhere near the deals I’ve seen on this site. Whether you’re exploring small towns or bigger cities, Whimstay can help you find verified vacation rentals without the need to plan weeks ahead.

Whether you’re exploring small towns or big cities, Whimstay helps you find verified vacation rentals without needing to plan so far in advance.
This makes it easy to stay spontaneous, adjust your route, and still enjoy comfortable, affordable lodging every night without a rigid itinerary.
This is cool for remote workers, too. You can enjoy a last-minute escape during the month of February in Chicago, for example, when you’re tired of the weather that doesn’t allow you to feel your face.
It may even help anxious travelers (that’s me!) relax a little more on the road, knowing that you probably won’t be stuck somewhere without a place to stay.
You want a staycation.
Let’s say you’d like a change of scenery. A quick look at accommodations in Paris, just a half hour outside of our home in the ‘burbs, offers up all kinds of options for cozy escapes and luxury-style accommodations.
They’re available across arrondissements, too, so you don’t have to sacrifice convenience for an affordable place to stay.
Whimstay is a great option for a staycation because it offers discounted, last-minute rentals right in your area or within day-trip distance.
Whether you want something across town or a luxury home nearby with a hot tub, Whimstay makes it easy to find a place to unwind without traveling far. Since many listings are available at reduced rates, you can treat yourself without breaking the bank.
It’s a simple, affordable way to refresh your routine, explore your own city from a new perspective, and enjoy a vacation vibe close to home.
Your original plans fell through.
If your Airbnb or hotel cancels or something unexpected happens, Whimstay can be a lifesaver for finding a quick alternative.
I’ll admit to not always booking with travel insurance in mind, despite numerous travel fails over the years. We have found ourselves having to switch gears on a dime, though, whether that’s to avoid ants in our sheets or as a response to family emergencies.
If your Airbnb or hotel cancels or something unexpected happens, Whimstay can be a lifesaver for finding a quick alternative.
Fun fact: If you have a travel credit card like a Capital One Venture or Chase Sapphire, you likely have some protections on that already. Chase has gotten us through quite a few jams, including family emergencies and last-minute cancellations. Know the perks before you book, especially if you’re on the fence about travel insurance.
Whimstay is a fast, reliable backup when bad stuff happens or your original plans fall through for whatever reason.
With a wide selection of verified properties and steep discounts on unbooked nights, the platform can help turn a stressful situation into an opportunity to save.
Book a Whimstay!Would I use Whimstay again?
I’m all about using all of the tools available out there for safe, affordable stays while traveling. I’m also all about drama-free stays, and we’ve encountered a lot of drama during stays with Airbnb.
Outside of the scenarios I’ve described above, mainly around last-minute stays, I’d still consider browsing Whimstay as part of our overall accommodations searching. Having more options is a good thing for travelers, especially as prices continue to rise elsewhere.
