About Me & Travel on the Reg

Welcome to Travel on the Reg, a travel and humor blog for those fortunate enough to have time for such frivolities.

My name’s Agnes, and I’m a regular person here to share my collected wisdoms and (hopefully) amusing truths about travel when it’s done in a regular way, and moving through life in a generally awkward fashion.

A woman poses with a glass of wine in Santa Barbara.

First off, here’s a bit about me.

I’m a Chicago native, the real deal. By that, I don’t mean I’m cooler than you, which I’m certainly not. I’m just from Chicago proper. If you’ve hung out in the Chicagoland area enough, you know there are some suburban folks who like the yards and space outside the city while still telling folks they’re from the city.

You can’t have it all, you guys.

Those Midwestern winters really build character, so in order to soften ourselves up a bit, my husband and I left Chicago for a while for San Diego. Seven years later, we were ready for a new adventure, something I detailed in a “Why the heck would you leave San Diego?”-style post for all to ponder.

If you’re looking for brevity, though, we’re currently living the dream in France.

We’ve taken total advantage of entrepreneurship and selling a home that no one should have paid as much as they did for in favor of copious amounts of cheese and deep research into which pain au chocolat in town holds the most chocolate.

What that all means is that we’re all over the place, along with the content you’ll see here. Niches be damned because I do (and write!) about what I want.

There’s a ton of San Diego content from our years in America’s Finest City, but I add posts from wherever we land as we move around this flat Earth.

I’m kidding, guys. I know the Earth is…what is it, actually? Round? Oval? I like science.

You’ll also see some andom stuff on the blog from time to time based on where I am in life both literally and figuratively. Sometimes I’m feeling retrospective, so I’ll indulge in a touch of that.

Sometimes I feel the need to share what I’ve learned about topics that don’t actually matter in the grand scheme of things.

Wherever I am, I hope to amuse you, if only temporarily, before you return to all of your adult responsibilities.

Prior to sharing all of these (mis)adventures and musings with you fine people, I was a special education teacher, first in Chicago and then in a couple of districts out in Southern California.

My experiences there left me both jaded and inspired…to do something else. I’ve gone into all that before so I won’t belabor it here. Also, no one needs to relive any traumas over here. Prior to education, I worked in journalism, so keep the “fake news” cracks to yourselves.

But why so “regular?”

By “regular” I mean I’m not out there hunting down the best Instagram shots in a flowing nightgown to then sell said nightgown on my social media.

The nightgowns would be a lie to start, by the way. I like to sleep in a shorts ensemble or flannels when it’s chilly.

I don’t float from exotic location to exotic location like some magical travel fairy. I fully grasp the privilege involved with travel and am transparent about experiences that just aren’t awesome all the time.

I chronicle quite a bit of that in my eBook, by the way!

My husband — a golf lover and keeper of our financial decisions with an impressive sense of direction — and I are lucky enough to work remote gigs that require little more than a strong wireless signal and the drive to get work done on the road.

That means we’re on the road often, doing so in as regular a way as possible and avoiding van life at all costs.

Personal space, people. I need it.

Nobody puts our fur baby Kimmy Kibbler in a van, by the way.

Note: We are childless by choice, but when I use phrases like “fur baby” it’s mostly to trigger those who believe a marriage isn’t official until babies are made.

Any travel should be celebrated for what it is, though, an interest in experiencing more than what’s immediately around you.

By “regular” I mean I’m a regular person, with regular thoughts and worries that I’ll share with you here, even when they don’t pertain to the latest bucket list hype.

I also have no interest in looking like anything other than myself, so get ready.

Sometimes traveling like regular people means you get sweaty or disheveled or dirty. You don’t get a costume change once you’ve hiked to the top of that vista, because that would leave less room in your bag for jerky.

It’s about to get real regular.

Ok, so now what?

You’ve come to the right place if you see the humor in life, especially as it pertains to travel, and enjoy calling out nonsense for what it is when it happens.

Yes, life and travel are awesome.

Sometimes they’re also annoying, or scary.

Maybe the trip you took didn’t meet your expectations that time around. Perhaps you’re wondering when it’ll stop being cool to ignore posted signage to cross barriers and take photos, despite the risk of falling into a deep ravine.

It won’t, so let’s have some fun.

Check out some of my favorite random posts for more on all of that!

If you’re here for tips or just want some help with the day-to-day of an upcoming trip, I’m here for that, too. I’m a Type A personality in the truest sense of the word. If you’re not all that into planning and just want to get out there and eat and explore, I’ll be sharing my itineraries with you.

Want to see where I’ve been? Here you go!

I’m about seeing as much as I can with the time I’ve got. This doesn’t mean I leave no time to linger over a charcuterie or tastings of local spirits. All of that is definitely still allowed. I just plan for it.

You will never hear me say that you need to spend multiple weeks at a destination to get a feel for it. It’s not true, and it’s not practical for regular people.

So tune out the noise and that co-worker telling you that it doesn’t make sense to go to Paris for “only” three days. Get yourself on that plane. Cheese plates are waiting!

Sounds pretty extra, actually.

It sure does, doesn’t it?

Now that you know that you’ll be getting loads of subjective, at times tongue-in-cheek information on destinations near and far alongside random musings that have little to do with anything else, it’s time to dive in.

It’s time for you to choose your own adventure and start clicking around the site. I’m so happy you’re here, and I hope you see at least one thing that puts a smile on your face.

Go on, now! Explore!
