102 Quotes About Travel With Friends to Inspire & Amuse

Traveling with a good friend can be so meaningful and such a good time. It can also be weird, dramatic, and hilarious, all at the same time.

Maybe you want to brag about that last epic trip you took with your girlies on our socials or hype up the squad for an upcoming adventure. The quotes for traveling friends below are a great place to start to make that happen.

I’m including accurate information on attribution where I can because facts matter in this place. If any of the quotes are anonymous, I’ll let you know. Sometimes the best ones come from cat posters, right?

Classic Quotes About Travel With Friends

A good travel quote is one that inspires travel, makes way for warm and fuzzy feelings, or reminds you about special moments from your own travels. These add the layer of friendship into the mix, so it’s possible they’ll make you laugh AND cry.

I’ll start with my favorites. You may have heard of some of these, but that’s why they’re the hits.

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” — Mark Twain

Sometimes despite your best efforts, things can still go sideways when you’re traveling with your friends. Twain speaks the truth here. Travel can bring out both the best and the worst in people.

Fun fact: We all know Mark Twain as a prolific writer, but at one time, he wanted to be a boardgame maker. The one game he attempted to market was too convoluted for the general public, though. It was called Memory Builder.

“We are all travelers in the wilderness of the world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

This one may also refer to life as an adventure that’s best enjoyed with friends, in addition to the friends one can make while exploring this big ol’ world of ours.

“As soon as I saw you, I knew a grand adventure was about to happen.” — A. A. Milne (as Winnie the Pooh)”

So sweet, right? Pooh Bear really knows how to pick ’em when it comes to misfits primed for adventure, despite Eeyore’s chronic pessimism. You always need a truth-teller in your friendship group, though.

“One of the great things about travel is that you find out how many good, kind people there are.” — Edith Wharton

This quote speaks more to the idea of meeting people while you’re traveling, which is anxiety-producing for this introvert, but always worth the effort. Come out of your bubble and you’re likely to learn more about a place than you would have otherwise.

Note: Make it a local and you’ll find out where all the best cheap eats are, too.

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.” — Anita Desai

A quote: "Whever you go becomes a part of you somehow."

This one isn’t strictly for traveling friends, but it’s a powerful idea. Imagine sharing an experience with someone close to you that no one could then take away, from either of you. That’s good stuff that everyone needs.

“I am awfully greedy; I want everything from life. I want to be a woman and to be a man, to have many friends and to have loneliness, to work much and write good books, to travel and enjoy myself, to be selfish and to be unselfish… You see, it is difficult to get all which I want. And then when I do not succeed I get mad with anger.” — Simone de Beauvoir

If you suffer from FOMO, this one’s likely relatable. If you and your traveling buddy both suffer from FOMO, your adventures might get a little frenetic from time to time. That’s OK. Whatever gets you out there!

“I have my own set of survival techniques. I am patient. I know how to pack light. But my one mighty travel talent is that I can make friends with anybody. I can make friends with the dead. If there isn’t anyone else around to talk to, I could probably make friends with a four-foot-tall pile of sheetrock. That is why I’m not afraid to travel to the most remote places in the world, not if there are human beings there to meet. People asked me before I left, “do you have friends [there]?’ and I would just shake my head no, thinking to myself, But I will.”  — Elizabeth Gilbert, from Eat, Pray, Love

I had to include Gilbert’s classic memoir here, as it inspired many travelers, particularly female travelers, to get out of their comfort zones and see the world.

For me, this one’s also a bit aspirational, as I don’t feel like I make friends easily. I can be pretty awkward to start. I’ll work on that if we ever travel together, I promise.

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” — Maya Angelou

Angelou’s classic travel quote is more about the power of travel as a way to expand people’s horizons, both literally and figuratively.

It also shows that with those expanded world views comes the potential to see people in a different light and better understand that what doesn’t divide us, unites us.

I’m not getting political here, but we could all broaden our horizons a bit.

“We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.” — Katie Thurmes

I can see this one offered as a gift to your pal on something from an Etsy shop, perhaps on a mug, a kitchen towel, or throw pillow. It’s a classic reminder to cherish moments shared with friends.

“We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.” — Paulo Coelho, from The Alchemist

This is deeper than traveling with your gal pals, but apply it to that exact situation, and all of a sudden it deepens terrific lady time, doesn’t it? Imagine this one while swirling a glass of good pinot on a wine-tasting adventure and things are getting really intense.

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life—and travel—leaves marks on you.” — Anthony Bourdain

I had to include Bourdain on this list, not because he loved traveling with his friends, but because he spoke of travel with more honesty than anyone else.

Travel moves you, not only literally, but figuratively, as well. It’s all the more special if you experience that with a close friend.

Fun fact: If you’re not a big fan of airplane food, you’d certainly not alone. I’m with you. Bourdain’s with you, too. His belief is that there’s “almost never a good reason to eat on a plane. You’ll never feel better after airplane food than before it.” He fills up on goodies on land ahead of travel, like the best ramen in Tokyo. Get after it.

“May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they take you far away from home.” — Trenton Lee Stewart, from The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey

A travel quote: "May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they take you far away from home."

This one speaks to the power of adventure and leaving the safety and security of home for greater things in the unknown. How exciting, right?

“A true friend unbosoms freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably.” — William Penn

I don’t know about the unbosoming, but all the rest, yes!

Note: Actually, I just looked up what it means to “unbosom” yourself. It’s to share secrets. In that case, yes, all of it!

“True friends don’t come with conditions.” — Aaron Lauritsen

This one’s good to remember when your traveling pal is being super bossy about your trip itinerary or giving you ultimatums.

It sounds like that friend is getting a little too comfortable and may need to be reminded of the power of compromise.

“Once more, amid the breeze, the shouting, the slanting sunlight on the high mountain, was shed that glamour, that strange invisible light of friendship, adventure, and content.” — William Golding, from The Lord of the Flies

OK, so The Lord of the Flies is likely the opposite of the trip vibes you’re going for here with your best travel mates. Still, this makes so much sense.

Underneath it all, any drama you may encounter or obstacles you may need to overcome, there’s something else, namely friendship and adventure.

That’s if you’re lucky, of course, and your friends don’t want to eat you…or whatever happens in that book. It’s been a while.

“True friends never apart maybe in distance but never in heart.” — Helen Keller

This one may even get you a little misty-eyed if you haven’t seen your good friend or travel companion in a while. It sounds like it’s time to plan a trip!

“Never travel faster than your guardian angel can fly.” — Mother Teresa

Unfortunately, sometimes I shut the guardian angel down when I’m out there exploring the world, indulging a bit too much in this or that.

This one is a good reminder to be mindful of living a kind, meaningful life, and finding friendships that allow you to do that.

“I have always lived violently, drunk hugely, eaten too much or not at all, slept around the clock or missed two nights of sleeping, worked too hard and too long in glory, or slobbed for a time in utter laziness. I’ve lifted, pulled, chopped, climbed, made love with joy and taken my hangovers as a consequence, not as a punishment.” — John Steinbeck, from Travels with Charley: In Search of America

This one’s here because it may be reminiscent of those backpacking trips you do with your friends right after college. It’s what I was talking about related to that guardian angel quote above.

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” — Gustave Flaubert

A travel quote: "“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

This is a good one because it’s important for you and your travel buddies to be reminded of your size when it comes to how you present your experiences to the world.

Sure, one person can make an impact in many ways. It’s also quite humbling to reflect on how much there is left to see of the world.

“We laugh and laugh, and nothing can ever be sad, no one can be lost, or dead, or far away: right now we are here, and nothing can mar our perfection, or steal the joy of this perfect moment.” — Audrey Niffenegger, from The Time Traveler’s Wife

From what I remember of the movie — I haven’t read the book, so no judgment, please — this is likely more of a romance thing. Doesn’t it just speak to a great relationship one may have with a good travel buddy, though?

When travel with friends is good, it’s really good and often hilarious. It’s perfection. Those moments stay with you always.

“Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason.” — Jerry Seinfeld

This is a shoutout to those trips you take with your friends that should have been planned better. It could also be about those off-the-beaten-path locales that should have stayed undiscovered for one reason or another.

I see you, Daytona Beach.

“Wherever we travel to, the wonderful people we meet become our family.” — Lailah Gifty Akita, from Think Great: Be Great!

It’s so true. There’s just something about connecting with someone while abroad and returning to that shared experience from time to time. This is true even if you saw them again or even if those moments are just in your thoughts.

“Will our lives be dull or packed with adventure?” — Kate Hattemer, from The Vigilante Poets of Selwyn Academy

I mean, will they? WILL THEY?? If this doesn’t motivate you to adopt that YOLO mindset, I don’t know what will.

“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” — Jack Kerouac, from On the Road

Kerouac’s travel style was likely more spontaneous than mine, but no matter. As he said, the road is life, and I like mine well-planned, especially when traveling with friends.

“Don’t talk to me. I’m tired and grumpy and I’ll probably make fun of you.” — Ann Brashares, from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Travel quote: “Don’t talk to me. I’m tired and grumpy and I’ll probably make fun of you.”

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is nothing if not a classic. There are a lot of sentimental gems in that one, but I chose this one to show that it doesn’t have to be all sunshine and ponies when you’re traveling with friends.

As with a partner, as with solo travel, sometimes travel is going to suck. Sometimes it’s terrible because you feel terrible, or you’re behaving like a jerk for reasons of hunger, or jet lag, or an intestinal parasite you picked up at that food stand.

If your friend is solid, though, they’ll forgive you.

“Good company on a journey makes the way seem shorter.” —Izaak Walton

This is one of my favorite road trip quotes. If you’re traveling a long distance with some good friends, that time goes a heck of a lot faster if you have your pals around.

Bonus points if you’re traveling with friends who know all the words to your favorite songs and enjoy harmonizing.

“The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” — Shirley MacLaine

I mean, that’s pretty cute, Shirley. The funny lady has a bit of a soft spot it seems for making fast friends out of strangers. Even though I’m an eternal introvert, there is a special kind of connection to be made with new friends abroad.

“Sharing adventures means enjoying them 100% more.” — Unknown

As someone who really isn’t all that into solo travel, I definitely agree with this one. Whether you’re traveling with your partner or with a gaggle of gal pals, there are so many more memories to be made if you’re sharing adventures with someone you love.

I mean, you don’t have to love them, I guess. You should like spending time with them, though.

“It is one of the blessings of old friends is that you can afford to be stupid with them.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you know, you know. If you don’t think you know, think about the last bachelor or bachelorette party you went to and get back to me.

“A journey well-shared is a journey well-enjoyed.” — Unknown

This is one of those short travel quotes that speaks to perspective-seeking.

If you’re lucky enough to find a good travel buddy, hang onto that travel buddy for dear life. It’s a rare thing to find friends you can gel with on that level, and makes travel so much more enjoyable.
